Habitat for Humanity of Baldwin County Alabama Demonstration Project

In November of 2008, BAIHP researchers met with a HERS rater, Andy Bell, hired by the Alabama Association of Habitat Affiliates to work with HFH affiliates around the state. BAIHP and Bell visited the Baldwin County HFH affiliate and conducted testing of a finished house in Foley, south of Mobile. The house and the duct system were within tightness specifications for building a prototype with a target HERS Index of 70 (see BAIHP recommended Gulf Coast Package). Two prototype homes were completed in 2009 (Figure 1) and incorporated a modified package that used a galvalume metal roof instead of radiant barrier decking. Final inspection and testing of the first prototype was completed in June of that year.  The home exceeded the target goal with a HERS Index of 68.

The affiliate completed construction of their second prototype home in November of 2009. The home features the Gulf Coast Package with increased R-values, a white metal roof, and a solar hot water heater. The home achieved a projected (pending future confirmation) HERS Index of 54, also exceeding the targeted goal
